Table Tennis star Darius Knight visits SYCT

On Wednesday 19 March, young table tennis players at Streatham Youth and Community Trust (SYCT) had the opportunity to put their skills to the test against Ambition Ambassador and Team GB star Darius Knight.

Young people at SYCT, part of Ambition member London Youth's network, were joined by the Olympics torch bearer to film a video about Ambition’s work. Knight, who has been an Ambassador for Ambition since 2013, took the opportunity to take on some of SYCT's members and teach them a few tricks.

The setting was similar to where Darius began his own table tennis journey. The star player first picked up a table tennis bat at a south London youth club aged 11 and he has been mastering his craft ever since.

Table tennis forms a significant part of Ambition’s Healthy Lifestyles programme, which highlights the importance of sport in promoting good physical and mental health. Ambition’s annual table tennis championship attracts over 100 competitors each year, and this year the charity has teamed up with national sports charity StreetGames to hold three table tennis events over the summer.

SYCT invited over seventy older Streatham residents to an afternoon of tea and entertainment to the theme of the Mad Hatters Tea Party.  A proper high tea of sandwiches, scones and cakes was accompanied by song, dance and magic.

The guests arrived through a tunnel to greeted with a cry of 'You're Late!' by the Mad Hatter (CEO Angie Foran).  Other staff and volunteers helped out the make it a great day these included Trustee Miranda Bevan dressed as Alice in Wonderland and Daphne Matthews as the Queen of Hearts.

In amongst the tea and cakes were entertainers Matt Daniel-Baker who wowed with card tricks and slight of hand, Hamish Jekyll tinkling the ivories and the Hot Foot Tappers tapping to a variety of tunes.

The afternoon was possible thanks to a great team of volunteers from amongst our staff, trustees and supporters.  A special thank you to Friends of the Elderly for sponsoring this event.
